Merogony takes place in the erythrocyte (in which 8 to 16 merozoites are formed) of the Ethiopian rodent Acomys spp. Later, the same parasite was found also in Namibian rodents. Gamonts are round or oval. Members of this genus (family) appear to be intermediate between the families Plasmodiidae and Babesiidae. Parasitic cells have a polar ring and rhoptries but are without subpellicular microtubules, distinguishing this group from the family Plasmodiidae. The presence of gamonts is a feature distinguishing them from the Babesiidae. The genus was previously referred as a member of the family Dactylosomidae, a “babesioid” of cold-blooded vertebrates.
