Emilie Bess and Kevin P. JohnsonIntroduction
Troctopsocidae contains six genera and 22 species found in Central America, South America, and Asia.
Characteristics
- Head:
- Antennae have 11, 13, or 15 segments.
- Frontal sutures are absent.
- Legs: Tarsi have three segments.
- Wings:
- Forewing: Pterostigma is open or closed basally.
- Vein Sc meets vein R.
- Vein 2A runs from its origin a short distance along wing margin, then joins 1A.
- Hindwing vein Rs first segment is either present or absent.
- Male:
- Phallosome lacks external parameres.
- Posterior end of phallosome arms are separated and connected by membrane.
- Female:
- Subgenital plate sometimes has a t-shaped sclerite.
- External valve of gonapophyses has two lobes apically.
Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
Molecular analysis including one species of Selenopsocus placed family Troctopsocidae in infraorder Amphientometae (18S nDNA; Johnson et al. 2004), but relationships within the family have not been investigated with molecular data.
