Comments The same scorpion viewed under normal (top) and ultraviolet light (bottom). The thin, transparent hyaline film in the outermost layer (cuticle) of its exoskeleton contains a protein that fluoresces.

Comments The genus Pandinus includes the largest living scorpions. Most are forest dwellers but this species occurs in the Serengeti's acacia woodlands. It is only seen above ground for a brief period each year, after the first heavy rains.
