Cephalopod Buccal Supports: Number

Richard E. Young, Michael Vecchione, and Katharina M. Mangold (1922-2003)
Cephalopoda Glossary Cephalopod Brachial and Buccal Crowns

The primitive number of buccal supports was probably eight. In most decapodiforms this number has been reduced to seven by the fusion of the two dorsal supports (supports I). In a few taxa this number is further reduced by the fusion of the two ventral supports (supports IV).
