Introduction
All known Zabrachia larvae are subcutaneous predators in coniferous trees (Rozkošný 1998). Z. polita is an associate and probably an important predator of Dendroctonus frontalis, the southern pine beetle.
Ten species of Zabrachia are found in North America, mostly Western North America, and Z. polita is the most widespread and common species. Five species are known only from the Neotropical region. Z. annulifemur is native to India. Z. madagascariensis is found only in Madagascar. Z. minutissima is found in Europe, Russia, and Uzbekistan, and 2 additional species are known from Eastern Europe and Russia. Z. occidentalis is known only from the Canary Islands (Woodley 2001).
Keys to the adults and known larvae of North American Zabrachia species are given in James (1965).
Characteristics
Zabrachia can be distinguished from other Nearctic Pachygastrinae by the following characteristics: R4 and R5 fused; arista bare or with short pubescence; frons not flattened dorsally; cell r3 shorter than pterostigma along costal margin (James 1981).References
