Ptilium habitus
Containing group: Ptiliinae

Introduction

This speciose genus is distributed, with few exceptions, worldwide. Numerous species of Ptilium have been erroneously placed within various genera of similar appearance, and thus the genus is in need of revision. Ptilium can be found in leaf litter samples, compost heaps or other situations involving decayed organic matter.

Characteristics

Characters of Ptilium include entire elytra, bifid pygyidial tooth, 'triangular' mesosternal process, pronotum with or without sulci (Dybas, 1990). As stated above, this genus is in need of revision, and the list of characters separating Ptilium form other Ptiliinae is tentative at best.

Geographic Distribution

With the exception of South America, Ptilium is distributed worldwide.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
