Pseudolycaena

This tree diagram shows the relationships between several groups of organisms.

The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.

This neotropical genus of large iridescent blue hairstreaks has recently been expanded from two species to five by the revision of Austin et al. (2007).Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
Austin et al. (2007) recognize two species groups based upon the presence (marsyas group) or absence (damo group) of vincular brush organs in the male genitalia. Eliot (1973) suggests that Pseudolycaena belongs to a group of genera that possess such organs, so the damo group is here represented as a clade supported by a synapomorphic loss of this feature.
