Containing group: Sarginae

Introduction

Microchrysa larvae are generally found in leaf litter and the upper layers of soil (Rozkošný 1998). Most Microchrysa species are native to sub-Saharan Africa. 2 species are in Australia, 4 in the Neotropics, 5 in the Oriental region. M. flaviventris is found in Asia, Madagascar, and Australia. M. polita and M. flavicornis are found in North America and Europe, M. cyaneiventris is from Europe, and M. ussuriana from Russia (Woodley 2001).

Characteristics

Microchrysa can be distinguished from other Nearctic Sarginae except Cephalochrysa by the bare eye, the distal projection on the calypter, and the equilateral ocellar triangle near posterior margin of head. It can be distinguished from Cephalochrysa by the small d cell, M1and M2 fading before the wing margin, and cell cup as long as the basal cells (James 1981).

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
