Euastacus crassus
Keith A. CrandallTypes
Holotype, Australian Museum, Sydney P11937 (male); allotype, Australian Museum, Sydney P11938 (female); paratypes, Australian Museum, Sydney P11939-40 (5 male, 7 female/ 1 male, 1 female).Distribution
The species is present in the Australian Capital Territory, especially in the high country west of Canberra, west of the Australian Capital Territory (e.g., near Brindabella), west of the Snowy Mountains and into the eastern semi-alpine country of Victoria as far as the Mount Beauty-Mount Hotham region. The range extends from north-east to south-west approximately 210 km. Drainage is via the Murrumbidgee, Murray and Victorian Murray tributaries (e.g., Mitta Mitta, Kiewa and Ovens Rivers.)Habitat
E. crassus was collected in 1981 at only two sites, one in the Brindabella Range near the type locality (altitude 1220 m), the other rather lower (640 m) east of Tom Groggin, near the New South Wales-Victorian border. Both sites were in largely granite areas, with dry sclerophyll and heath the dominant vegetation. Ferns were abundant along the banks near the type locality. It appears that that species has a patchy distribution in the Australian Capital Territory, occuring in high streams with relatively undisturbed vegetation. Extensive state forests east of Tumut also support populations of E. crassus. The Victorian localities are high (above 1000 m) and may be snow covered in winter.References
